Posture & Balance

Most of us are aware of the five 'senses', a term introduced by Thomas Willis (1621-1675) - sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch. However, there are now thought to be between 9 and 21 senses in all, depending on which researcher you ask.

It was not until the early 19th century that the 'muscle' sense was identified. This is now known as proprioception. Receptors in the muscles are constantly sending information back to the brain about the state that each is in, giving rise to a sense of where the body is located in space and how it is moving.

Various diseases and neurological problems can cause the proprioceptive sense to malfunction, leading to problems with posture and balance.

The sense of balance (or equilibrioception) in humans is largely controlled by the vestibular system, using sense organs located in the inner ear.

About Falls

At Gentle Family Chiropractic gold standard posturography is utilised to help measure risk of falling and to help measure progress throughout the treatment period.

See this video which helps explain how a patient is measured. The UK is much the same as the USA with regard to fall risk in the population.
